When it comes to oral health, everyone’s always worried about gum disease and cavities. There is, however, one condition that is most likely hiding in your mouth undetected—pericoronitis. If you ever noticed tenderness or swelling near a wisdom tooth, particularly a partially erupted one, then you may have already encountered this behind-the-scenes gum infection. Ignore it, and it can cause some serious issues, so you must know its signs and seek treatment right away.
Pericoronitis is inflammation and infection of the gum over a partially erupted wisdom tooth. It occurs when food particles and bacteria accumulate under the gum flap covering the tooth and cause irritation, swelling, and infection. It is more prevalent in young adults, especially late teens or early twenties when wisdom teeth usually erupt.
The major reason for pericoronitis is food and bacteria entrapment under the gum flap. Pericoronitis has other reasons too, such as:
Poor oral hygiene – When brushing and flossing fail to reach the wisdom teeth adequately, bacteria proliferate.
Impacted wisdom teeth – When wisdom teeth fail to erupt in the normal way, they create an infection breeding ground.
Trauma from biting – The top teeth can repeatedly bite on the swollen gum flap, leading to inflammation and irritation.
Stress or compromised immunity – Your body may be less effective at fighting infection and permitting bacteria to spread.
The initial symptoms of pericoronitis are typically nonspecific, but as the infection advances, symptoms become more apparent. Some of the typical symptoms are swollen and sore gums surrounding the wisdom tooth. Bad taste and bad mouth odor due to trapped bacteria. Difficult opening of the mouth because of swelling and pain. Development of pus if the intensity was extremely high, which could potentially mean an abscess. Sore, swollen lymph nodes below the jaw, which could mean a spreading infection
Not treating such symptoms could result in more severe conditions like spreading infections or even breathing and swallowing problems when extreme.
If you’re suspecting pericoronitis, immediate dental attention is needed. Our competent experts here at Enhance Dental are skilled in diagnosing and treating gum infection successfully. Treatment would vary according to how advanced the case was and may go from:
1. Professional CleaningThe gum area around the infected tooth is thoroughly cleaned with the removal of food particles and bacteria, lessening swelling and pain.
2. Antibiotics for Infection ControlFor more serious infections, antibiotics are often prescribed to keep the bacteria from spreading.
3. Relief of Pain and Home TreatmentYour dentist can prescribe warm salt water rinses, pain relief, and augmented oral hygiene for home treatment.
4. Wisdom Tooth RemovalAs a solution for chronic pericoronitis, wisdom tooth removal might be the most desirable long-term remedy for avoiding persistent infection.
Although some instances cannot be prevented, proper oral hygiene is the best means of minimizing the risk of pericoronitis. Here’s what you can do:
Brush and floss regularly, particularly around your wisdom teeth. Use an antibacterial mouthwash to eliminate harmful bacteria from your mouth. Go for regular check-ups and cleanings with your dentist. Wisdom tooth removal can be performed if your dentist advises you to do so.
